Northumbria University
Northumbria is one of England’s largest modern metropolitan universities, delivering around 500 programmes to more than 31,500 students.
The University’s schools of Design, Law and Newcastle Business School have recently moved into two brand new state-of-the-art buildings in Newcastle city centre and a major multi-million pound programme of renovation and refurbishment, including plans to develop a £20m sports facility, is currently underway.
Northumbria was named the UK’s Best Modern University by The Times in it’s 2005 Good University Guide and is one of the country’s top 15 teaching universities with 16 subject areas officially rated as ‘excellent’. In fact, The Sunday Times has said that “Northumbria has a teaching record that many longer established universities find hard to match.”
Courses in almost every major subject area are provided through the schools of Applied Sciences; Arts & Social Sciences; Built Environment; Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences; Design; Law; Psychology & Sport Sciences and the Newcastle Business School, all based in the city centre of Newcastle, while a smaller campus based at Coach Lane, three miles east of the city centre, provides outstanding learning and teaching facilities for students on education, health and social work courses.
The University regularly wins awards for the excellence of its student provision and earlier this year, was named the most IT enabled organisation in the UK by Computing magazine, beating international organisations including Honda Formula 1 to scoop the title. Outstanding library facilities won the President’s Award at the American WebFeat awards and the Student Services department recently gained Matrix accreditation for the second time for its excellent provision of careers advice, information and guidance.
Bursaries and scholarships of up to £1,000 per year are available for all students and statistics show that over 94% of graduates are in work or postgraduate education within six months of leaving.
Over 3,000 international students from more than 90 different countries study at Northumbria, giving both the University and the city centre a truly diverse, cultural mix.
Glittering alumni include Jonathan Ive CBE, Vice-President for Industrial Design at Apple, designer of the iPod and iMac range of computers and currently the best, known designer in the world. Jonathan is now a Visiting Professor in the School of Design, passing on the benefits of his experience to current undergraduates.
Fashion graduate Scott Henshall is in demand designing dresses for celebrities and appeared in ITV’s I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, while Industrial Designer Peter Horbury has taken on a leading role for Ford in the USA. Sports Studies graduate Martin Corrie MBE has captained the England rugby team and Business graduate Amanda Berry is now Chief Executive of BAFTA, the British Academy for Film & TV Arts.
